INTRAN is a free and confidential service, providing British Sign Language interpreters, lipspeakers and interpreters in 150 languages. The interpreting service is organised by the service provider and is available where you see the INTRAN symbol.
Here are some of the services that can communicate with you through an interpreter: Social Services; Housing; Police; Doctor’s surgeries; Hospitals; Dentists; Pharmacists; Opticians; Schools; Environmental Health; Libraries.
For other services, if you are not sure whether INTRAN is available, please show your INTRAN card or ask the staff if you can have an interpreter.
For more information about interpretation and translation services in Norfolk, we have provided the following leaflets in our most common languages. Click on the phrases below to read the pdf files in that language:
What is INTRAN?
INTRAN is Norfolk’s multi-agency partnership that provides a free translation and interpretation service to people who are deaf, or whose first language isn’t English.
INTRAN’s current partners include Norfolk NHS trusts, Norfolk County Council and local councils, Norfolk Constabulary and Norfolk Probation Service.
Who uses INTRAN?
About 1.9% of Norfolk’s population of around 800,000 people are from ethnic minority groups. Approximately 35,000 Norfolk people are registered severely or profoundly deaf.
More than 80 different languages are spoken in Norfolk. Between April 2005 and April 2006, a total of 52 different languages were requested by people using Norfolk PCTs’ services. Portuguese was the most requested language, followed by Russian, British Sign Language, Lithuanian, Polish, Turkish and Sylheti, which is a dialect of Bengali.
Where can I receive services?
INTRAN’s services are available everywhere you see the INTRAN logo.

This includes all your local NHS health services, in hospitals, health centres, clinics, doctors’ surgeries, dentists, opticians and pharmacies.
