What is the Freedom of Information Act?

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 came into force in January 2005 and gives any person legal rights of access to information which is held by a public authority.

The Ministry of Justice is responsible for freedom of information policy in the UK and develops the framework for the Act to be enacted by public authorities.

Making a request for information

We already make a lot of information available. Before making your request, please:

• Read through our Publication Scheme - under the FOI Act, we are required to adopt a Publication Scheme which contains information we make available. Publication schemes explain what information is routinely made available, where and when that information is available, and whether there will be a charge for the information.
• Check through the archive of previous Information released under the Freedom of Information Act.
