Disability in Norfolk today - what do you think?

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 (DDA) and the Disability Equality Duty 2005, specify that all public bodies must review and revise their disability equality schemes every three years. NHS Norfolk’s Disability Equality duties are reflected in our Single Equality Scheme which was published in July this year.

To ensure that NHS Norfolk is meeting our legislative requirements, we are compiling a Disability Equality Report on the actions and plans in place for the next three years to show how we will continue to promote equality for disabled people.

To provide evidence and to help us determine priorities for NHS Norfolk, we have added ‘health’ questions in Norfolk County Council’s survey of disabled people in Norfolk The survey ‘Disability in Norfolk today - what do you think?’ will run until 26 February 2010.

With the help of Norfolk Coalition of Disabled People and other disability access groups, following the survey, a new ‘expert’ group will be set up to examine and scrutinise progress around disability equality. This group will help to inform future plans and will help to support public authorities to meet their specific duties under the DDA in relation to co-production and involvement of disabled people in action planning. This work is likely to begin in the new financial year and will be informed by findings of the survey. Following the survey the evidence base will be published on Norfolk Insight.

Please share this information with any disabled person/people or their carers, including those with learning disabilities you are involved with and encourage them to take part in the survey.
