MSLCs are independent forums that bring together the users, providers and commissioners of maternity services to design services that meet the needs of local women and their families. They are locally-based groups that include patients, maternity staff and commissioners, and so are well placed to advise on developments in local maternity services. Their main objectives are to plan, monitor and improve local maternity services.
In Norfolk MSLCs report to NHS Norfolk (and NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney) who lead on maternity commissioning. The forums also have strong links with other bodies including labour ward forums, and care networks.
NHS Norfolk currently supports two MSLCs: one based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) in Kings Lynn and the other based around the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Foundation Trust (NNUHFT).

Midwifery Led Birthing Units
NHS Norfolk is in the process of deciding the commissioning intentions for two MLBU’s. As part of the process we wanted to seek the views of patients, members of the public and stakeholders regarding a number of factors including services within the unit. The units are to be co-located with the labour wards within the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Foundation Trust, Norwich and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Kings Lynn.
The results of the research will be used when drawing up the service specification for the two MLBU’s
| May 2010 | Results of the independent PPI research |
| November 2009 | Depth interviews with members of the Norfolk Disabled Parents Alliance |
| October 2009 | Three discussion groups with parents, the details of which are as follows: Group 1: Norwich mothers Group 2: Norwich fathers Group 3: King’s Lynn mothers |
| October – December 2009 | Depth interviews with members of the two Maternity Services Liaison Committees linked the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital Foundation Trust and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. |
English as an Additional Language (EAL)
We are now looking into English as an Additional Language (EAL) provision for users of Maternity Services, and would like to highlight a group provision that is now available. There is an EAL Parents Group which runs on a Tuesday 10am-12noon, at Nar Children’s Centre, Church Lane, Kings Lynn, PE30 5AE. The group is run by Ann Easton and her contact is: 01553 776300 or 07788 680216. There is a Lithuanian and Russian speaker at this group. They discuss Antenatal Information, Pain Relief, Labour, Breastfeeding, Postnatal Support, Newborn Information and how to access other services for young children, e.g Dentistry, Child-minding and Baby Massage.
