News from the R&D office

This section provides details of the latest news from the R&D office, and news affecting researchers, GP Practices, NHS Staff and the General Public.

February 2012 - Recently released National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) figures of NHS patients recruited into research have shown that NHS Norfolk & Waveney was the top recruiting PCT in England for 2010/11. The figures, which are available on the Guardian website, show that 4399 patients were recruited into NIHR portfolio studies. With the NIHR emphasis to increase the number of patients into research this is fantastic news! Andrew Morgan, Chief Executive of NHS Norfolk & Waveney commented that this was an “excellent good news story”.

These figures are indicative of the high level of GP support in NHS Norfolk & Waveney for research, and of the enthusiasm of patients to engage in research. Preliminary 11/12 projections indicate that we on are target and may beat last year’s total.

January 2012 – The Norfolk Arthritis Register is now in its 20th year. The study team has issued their latest newsletter which can be viewed here.

July 2010 - The NHS Norfolk R&D office is delighted to report the outcome of the first round of the Primary Care Researcher Bursary application process. Four bursaries have been awarded, each one for a sum of £6000 to support the recipient in developing a research proposal.

The successful applicants are:

  • Clare Daly, Senior Education Pharmacist with NHS Norfolk;
  • Clare Hambling, a GP at the Watlington Medical Centre in West Norfolk;
  • Penny Morgan, Lead Psychologist for Norfolk Community Health and Care’s Learning Difficulties Service
  • Kerry Whitaker-Bethel, Counselling Psychologist with Norfolk Community Health and Care’s Learning Difficulties Service.

Penny Morgan said that it was “good to see local patient centred research actively prioritised, funded and supported. The application process was straightforward, and I would encourage other staff to apply.”

Kerry Whitaker-Bethel added “… this will enable the research element of my role as a psychologist to be appropriately prioritised… research is the foundation for evidence-based practise and as such makes a valuable contribution to the work that we do.”

Bursary recipients will work with the NHS Norfolk R&D office and the NIHR East of England Research Design Service to develop full proposals that can be submitted to one of the National Institute for Health Research’s funding streams. Judy Henwood, Research Facilitator at NHS Norfolk remarked “I am delighted that we have been able to award four bursaries: I look forward to an exhilarating 6 months as the proposals develop.”
