Self care
What is Self Care?
Self Care is about taking control of your own health and wellbeing. It is how you treat minor ailments, take medicines and seek help when you need it as well as keeping fit and healthy.
Learning to look after your health is a good thing – puts you in control, improves your quality of life and helps you live more healthily.
There is lots of information and support available to help you to do this:
• Get fit
• Stop smoking
• Cut down on alcohol
• Eat more healthily
The NHS Choices website contains useful information on self care support and links to information on specific health conditions.
Your local pharmacist can give you help and advice about your health and wellbeing, and about treating minor ailments, particularly if you have a long term condition. Speak to your local pharmacist, GP or practice nurse about how they can help you take control.
If you’re living with a long-term condition, Your health, your way is all about how self care can help you cope better with your condition and get more out of life.

Stuart said: “My wife discovered an article advertising a "Challenge Arthritis" course in King's Lynn. I applied and was accepted - for which I am now very thankful. The tutors both have arthritis and their empathy was clear in the way the course was presented. It was attended by other people who were experiencing the same feelings as me and we could discuss our own situations and remedies. “Through a combination of course content, including diet, exercise, structured action planning and group discussions our negative outlook turned around to become highly positive and forward looking. The course has not cured our Arthritis but has given us a better understanding of it and a series of tools to help us 'Self-Manage' our conditions. We no longer felt alone with our problems. My personal situation has improved far beyond expectation. From being frightened and virtually house-bound, I now walk the dog twice daily again and have been on a 4 mile walk. We are planning a trip to Australia for next year and so long as I keep up the "self-management" regime, I see no problem in achieving this and maintaining an active life.” Stuart from King's Lynn |

Case study We all know that there is no magic cure for arthritis but I’m really happy that I did the course as I now know I am not alone and talking is great for the healing process.' |
