Sexually transmitted infections (STIs)
You can catch an STI by having sexual contact with someone who is infected.
You won’t always be able to tell if someone has an infection, and you may not know if you have one as many people don’t have any symptoms. So if you haven’t used condoms it may be a good idea to go and get tested.
If you do have symptoms and suspect that you may have an STI, don't panic. You simply need to get tested, and then treatment can be given if it's needed.
A sexual health or genito-urinary medicine (GUM) clinic specialises in sexual health, and gives tests and treatment for many STIs. Some GP practices and pharmacies also offer a range of services.
